Description: The Genetics Department was formed in 1980 and currently consists of 24 faculty members reflecting a diverse yet complementary range of research interests. The undergraduate major in genetics was established in 1983 and started out with only 20 students. In addition to taking a challenging series of required courses, genetics majors are encouraged to participate in research projects conducted in individual faculty members' laboratories. The average GPA of graduating genetics majors since inception of the program is 3.40. Career Opportunities: The genetics major provides a strong base for biological science-oriented careers. Ninety percent of genetics graduates go on to pursue advanced degrees in research and/or medicine.
Expectations
of Transfer Students:
Students should complete undergraduate biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, and biochemistry in preparation for transferring to the genetics major.
Scholarships: The University of Georgia can nominate up to four sophomores or juniors for Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships to support outstanding students pursuing careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. Genetics majors have been very successful in recent years in winning these selective national awards (300 awarded nationally each year). The on-campus selection process begins in the fall term. Study Abroad: UGA at Oxford Study Abroad Program
Internships: Research assistant positions are occassionally available for undergaduates in the laboratories of genetics faculty members. The Genetics Department sponsors a "Summer Undergraduate Fellowships in Genetics (SUNFIG)" program. Underrepresented minority students are especially encouraged to apply.
