General Information

PURPOSE AND ORGANIZATION
The College of Public Health offers educational programs that lead to a number of professional careers. Upon completing core curriculum requirements, students take specialized professional courses specific to their majors and professional goals. Applied learning experiences and internships are emphasized in all programs of study in order to prepare students for their future work settings. Leadership and communication skills are also emphasized through various college programs and activities as are experiences that promote knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of multicultural diversity.

FACILITIES
The Department of Environmental Health Science (EHS) is housed in the Environmental Health Science Building. The building is located at the corner of Greene Street and D.W. Brooks Drive on the University of Georgia campus. It is identified as Building 1050 on campus maps. The Environmental Health Science Building is approximately 7500 square feet in size of which over half is laboratory space and the remainder is split between classroom and office space.

The Department of Health Promotion and Behavior (HPB) is housed on the 3rd floor of the Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities. It is located at 300 River Road. It is identified as building 1690 on campus maps. The HPB Department has space distributed on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities.

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics as well as the Department of Health Policy and Management is housed in the Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences. The 140,000 square foot Coverdell Building houses a dynamic, interactive mix of disciplines with a unifying focus on problems of biomedical importance. Besides laboratories and administrative offices, the Coverdell Center includes the University's permier animal facility. The $40 million building is constructed from indigenous granite and recycled materials, and incorporates such "green", or environmentally friendly, aspects of design as sensors that pick up on natural light levels and dim flourescent fixtures and a water conservation system that will ensure tht the facility is as energy-efficient as possible.

The Institute of Gerontology is housed in the Slaughter Building. The building is located at the corner of Hancock and College Avenues in downtown Athens. The Institute of Gerontology building comprises approximately 7,800 square feet and consists of offices, supply and copy rooms, as well as 662 square foot classroom and conference room.

The Institute for Health Management in Mass Destruction Defense (IHMD) is housed in Barrow Hall. It currently occupies 4400 square feet of contiguous laboratory, office, and EOC space on the first floor.

ACCREDITATION
The Department of Environmental Health Science is accredited by the Environmental Health Accreditation Council (EHAC). The College is an applicant for accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).

SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships include the Rowe Award, the John J. Sheuring Scholarship, and a Georgia Power Scholarship for students with disadvantaged backgrounds.
